All about IISER's and admission procedures

 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier science education and research institutes in India. The institutes were created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), under The National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010 (an amendment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007), which was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.NISER  is established in Bhubaneswar  and five IISERs have been established across the country, namely IISER Kolkata in West Bengal, IISER Pune in Maharashtra, IISER Mohali in Punjab, IISER Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and IISER Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. 

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata is functioning from the temporary campus at Mohanpur, a temporary arrangement within the campus of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Some labs have already been shifted to its permanent campus,  Haringhata, Kalyani near Kolkata.Some administrative works are also being carried out at the Salt Lake office of IISER Kolkata which also has a guest house. National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar (NISER )is being administered by the Department of Atomic Energy.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune has started functioning from the National Chemical Laboratory Pune campus. Its permanent campus is under construction  at Pashan, Pune.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research(IISER), Mohali has started functioning from the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration complex in Sector 26 Chandigarh.Now Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali is fully functioning on its permanent campus at Sector 81.  This is basically situated in a world class Mohali city and very near to Chandigarh.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal started functioning from the ITI Gas Rahat Building Govindpura Bhopal. The Institute shifted to its main campus in Bhauri in August 2012.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram has started functioning from the College of Engineering , Trivandrum. Land for the permanent campus has been identified at Vithura, within 30 km from the city, near Ponmudi.

3) Boards Channel

1. State and Central Boards (top 1% in each board in class 12th)
2. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Basic Science Stream: Students qualifying in SA (2013)/SX (2014)/SB (2014) 
   Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2014: Students obtaining a minimum of 60% marks in class XII and securing a place in the Rank List of Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)  for the admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) 
   State and Central Boards: Students passed class XII i or appearing  in science stream with either
   • Marks above or equal to the cut-off percentage declared by DST (http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in) as eligibility for INSPIRE fellowship. For OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/PD category candidates, there is a 5% relaxation in the DST cut-off. The cut-off for SC/ST candidates is 55% in class XII for all boards 
     
     OR
   • Advisory note for the eligibility for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) under INSPIRE scheme based only on the performance in class XII board examination
   Students applying through State and Central Boards channel will be required to appear and qualify the IISER Aptitude Test.

KVPY 2014 FEW TIPS FOR PREPARATION

KVPY – Few tips

KVPY scholarship aptitude test is conducted every year by the Department of Science & Technology to encourage student’s interest in basic science subjects and pursue their higher studies in science. Students can secure admission for BS course in premier institutes such as IISc, Bangalore or any one of five IISER’s, NISER or to any central government institutes offering graduation or post graduation in science subjects.. The selection will be for the students who have topped the rank list based on the written test and interview. Students qualified through KVPY and secured admission in these institutes will be eligible to receive scholarship throughout their course period. Further, if the student continues in science stream for post graduation or research, the scholarship will be continued till such time. Students who secure admission in few reputed institutes for Science are also eligible to get the scholarship. Students who secure admission through JEE advanced for Integrated MSc or MS programmes like Mathematics & Computing, Physics etc in IITs are also eligible for the scholarship.

Though it is told that the syllabus of KVPY is based on class portions, focused and planned preparation is required to clear the test. Students preparing for entrance exams such as IIT JEE / medical entrance can clear the test comparatively easier than students who concentrate more on school syllabus. Thorough understanding of subjects and clarity in concepts are required for examination and interview.  Familiarity with well known text books which discuss on concepts of subjects is helpful in clearing the examination.

    

For SA question papers of the test will be common for both Mathematics and Biology stream students. For SX Students shall attempt questions for  three of the subjects respective to their streams (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry and Biology). Attempting questions from more than three subjects is a futile effort as marks of three subjects only will be counted. Minus marks becomes detrimental if questions are attempted without confidence in answer. Cut-off marks of written examinations will be varying every year depending on average performance. However, variation will be marginal and comparable with previous years in respective streams. Selection of number of students is also not fixed. It normally varies and every year more and more students are being selected. Separate cut-off marks and ranklist are there for students under reservation. Selection of students under mentorship scheme which was introduced in the year 2012 was withdrawn in subsequent year. Students selected under mentorship scheme will become eligible for the scholarship if they pursue for degree programes in science stream. All the states will have number of test centres for written examination. The examination is normally in the month of November.

Students qualified in the written test will be called for interview in the month of January at Centres like IISc or IISER’s. Students are required to refresh their concepts before the interview. Students are required to submit a confidential report from their class teacher to the interview board. Senior faculties, Scientist, academicians constitute the Interview board. Approximately 30 minutes will be given for a student during the interview. Students shall be ready to have a self introduction. Interview board would be warm and cordial. Caution to be taken by students to listen properly and understand the questions before attempting to answer. Subject experts will be asking questions from their field only. However, very rarely, students may face general questions. However such questions will be of very preliminary level from high school text books. If required, candidates are allowed to use writing boards to write equations or draw diagrams. Student’s concepts and fundamentals in subject will be assessed by the board. More than the correctness of answer, the approach towards the answer is valued. Never try to bluff or beat around an answer. Normally aggregate of 75% of the marks scored in written exam and 25% of the marks scored in interview are considered for the preparation of rank list.

GATE 2015 score calculation criteria

The registrations for GATE 2015 have begun. To apply, candidates should first register by providing a valid email address, mobile number and a GOAPS password. Upon registration, an email and SMS containing a GOAPS Enrolment ID will be sent to the candidates. Candidates need to remember this along with the GOAPS password for all GATE 2015 related communications/website operations.

According to a notification on the official website, "In 2015, the examination for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers is being held in multi-sessions. For these papers, a suitable normalisation is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions. The normalisation will be done on the basis of a fundamental assumption that 'in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions'. This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2015 is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random. Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude".

Qualifications: In order to be eligible, candidates should have acquired a BE/B.Tech degree. Candidates are required to have appeared and qualified GATE 2015.

Salary: Candidates will be appointed in job group 'A' in the salary scale of Rs 24, 900- 50, 500.

Selection procedure: Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of GATE 2015 scores in Mechanical/Chemical/Civil/Electrical/ Instrumentation discipline. Thereafter, they will be evaluated on the basis of GD and Personal Interviews. Lastly, candidates will have to undergo a medical fitness test in pre-medical employment exam.

IIT council Tessy Thomas & Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath nominated

Two prominent women scientists nominated to IIT apex council

According to sources till now there is no woman in the IIT council, the apex body of 16 IITs, but now HRD ministry has nominated two women scientists Tessy Thomas and Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath to the IIT council.

The main idea behind bringing woman to IIT council is to show that science is not the sole preserve of men.

About Tessy Thomas

Tessy Thomas is the first woman to head India’s missile programme. She is in charge of Agni-4 missile project of Defence Research Development Organization.

About Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath

Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath helped establish National Brain Research Centre. Her research on neurogenerative disorders can be used to develop disease-modifying therapies.
